Why Sheffield
Because Sheffield has two universities, somewhere around sixty thousand students, and a night out that is better than it gets credit for. Anybody who has been on West Street on Halloween weekend knows the city already dresses up harder than most.
Friday the 30th is the night before Halloween proper — which is the one everybody actually goes out on, and the one you can still make it home from.
What Sheffield has not had is a night where the costume is the door policy, and where the room is full of people who found it rather than people who walked past it.
What makes a good night out in Sheffield
Sheffield is a better night out than it gets credit for, and everybody who lives here has the same three complaints about the bad ones.
You queue for forty minutes to get into a room you have already seen. The big places on West Street are the big places on West Street. They are fine. They are also the same on the last Friday of every month.
Nobody made an effort. A room where everybody dressed up is a different room. It changes how people talk to each other — which is the actual reason costume nights are better, and the reason people remember them for years.
You end up with nothing. Four hours, a round of drinks you cannot account for, and a camera roll of photographs taken in a stairwell.
Hideout is built against all three. The costume is the door policy, the location is different every time, and what you made gets seen by more than the twelve people who were standing near you.
Halloween does not have to end in October
Here is the thing we actually believe, and it is the reason this night exists at all.
One night a year is a stupid rule.
For one night, everybody gets to be something else. People who would never describe themselves as creative spend a fortnight building a costume. People who are quiet all year walk into a room as a demon and own it. And the next morning everybody puts it in a bag and agrees not to mention it for twelve months.
