Elon Musk says "Instagram is for girls" — the real question is what it is for

This week Elon Musk replied to a post on X with four words, and the internet has not stopped arguing since.

The account Geiger Capital announced it had deleted Instagram, calling it an "inherently female app" with "zero benefit." Musk's reply was short enough to fit on a badge:

> Instagram is for girls.

It is not the first time. He said something close to it in May, during a discussion about how social media habits change as people get older.

The replies split exactly as you would expect. Half the timeline agreed. The other half pointed out, correctly, that the numbers do not say that at all.

What the numbers actually say

Worth getting right before building an argument on it. As of late 2025, Instagram's global audience was close to an even split — roughly 50.6% men and 49.4% women. In the United States it tilts the other way, about 55.2% women to 44.8% men.

So "Instagram is for girls" is not a description of who is there. Men are half of it.

Which makes the gender argument the least interesting thing in the whole exchange. Because buried inside Geiger Capital's post is a far better word, and almost nobody picked it up.

Zero benefit.

The real question is not who a feed is for. It is what it is for.

Ask it about any app you already have. After an hour in it, what do you have?

Not what did you see — what do you *have*. A person you now know. A skill you did not have. Something you made. A group you belong to. A conversation that is still going tomorrow.

For most feeds the honest answer is: nothing. You have an hour less.

That is not an accident or a moral failing on your part. It is the design working exactly as intended. A feed optimised for watch time will always learn to serve whatever holds a stranger's eye the longest — and what holds a stranger's eye the longest is almost never what is good for them. The metric is attention. Attention is the product. Whether you got anything out of it was never a number anybody was measuring.

Nothing about that is specific to one gender. Everyone is being measured the same way.

The question worth asking in 2026 is not whether an app is for men or for women. It is whether an app is for *you* — and whether anything in it is still there when you put the phone down.

What is Demi Gods Universe?

Demi Gods Universe, or DGU, is a free social community app for anime, manga, comic, superhero, K-pop, K-drama and cosplay fans. It is one shared universe rather than a feed of strangers: you claim a name nobody else can take, find the people who love what you love, join or build communities, share what you make, and earn a standing that comes from what you create.

It is built around a single question that most social apps never ask. What do you actually care about? Everything else follows from the answer.

Built on what you are into, not on who is looking

You pick the universe you are in. Follow the fandoms, creators and communities you chose. Not what an algorithm learned would keep you still.

Alliances are real communities. Start one for a series, a group, a city, a craft, a campaign. Any member can shape it — it belongs to the people in it. That is a thing you are *in*, not a thing you watched.

Your work gets the whole screen. One post at a time, full screen. Cosplay builds, artwork, edits, original characters, writing. Your craft, seen properly.

Standing you earned. Everyone starts at Power 10 and rises through Spark, Awakened, Champion, Titan and Ascendant. Power comes from what you create and how you take part. It cannot be bought at any price, and followers do not generate it. No number next to your name is for sale, which means every number next to your name means something.

People you can actually reach. Message them. Ally with them. Challenge them. The person whose work stopped you is somebody you can talk to, not somebody you scrolled past.

Connection that produces something

Here is the honest version, with what is live separated from what is coming.

Live today: the full-screen feed, alliances, direct messages, allies and challenges, search that finds people by what they love, and Power that can only be earned.

Coming:

An hour here should leave you with something: a person, a piece of work, a group, or progress. That is the whole design brief.

And it is more fun

This part gets lost in every serious conversation about social media, so let us be unserious for a second.

You get to invent a character and give them powers and a weakness that makes the powers honest. You get to claim a name permanently. You get to pick a side — the Sworn, the Neutral or the Fallen. You can challenge somebody from their own post and settle it. You can build an alliance with an emblem and a ritual and five people who turn up every week.

Scrolling is not fun. It is just frictionless. There is a difference, and you know it at two in the morning when you cannot remember a single thing you saw.

Questions people ask

What is a good alternative to Instagram in 2026? Demi Gods Universe is a social community app built around shared interests rather than appearance — anime, manga, comics, superheroes, K-pop, K-drama and cosplay. You join communities called alliances, share what you make full screen, and build a standing earned through what you create. It is free on iPhone and Android.

What did Elon Musk say about Instagram? In early October 2026 Musk replied "Instagram is for girls" to a post by Geiger Capital, which had deleted its Instagram account and called it an "inherently female app" with "zero benefit." Instagram's global audience is in fact close to an even gender split.

Is Demi Gods Universe only for men, or only for women? Neither, and the question does not really apply. It sorts people by what they love, not by who they are. Cosplayers, artists, K-pop fans, comic readers, roleplayers — everybody is in the same universe.

Is it free? Yes. Free on iPhone and Android, with no adverts. Nothing about your rank is purchasable.

Can creators earn from it? A marketplace for commissions, prints, designs and original art is coming. What is live today is the audience and the communities it needs to work.

Being straight about where we are

DGU launched recently and we are not going to pretend it is the size of the apps being argued about on X. What is here is a universe where the same people see what you post, your community is findable by the people who would love it, nothing about your standing can be purchased, and an hour spent in it is meant to leave you with something.

If "zero benefit" is the part of that argument that stuck with you, this is the app built in the opposite direction.

Start here

  1. Claim your name before somebody else does — it is permanent.
  2. Pick a side — the Sworn, the Neutral or the Fallen.
  3. Find your people — search what you love and follow the ones who make it.
  4. Start an alliance, or join one, and bring four or five people who post.
  5. Put your work up full screen and let it be seen properly.

Demi Gods Universe is free on iPhone and Android, with no adverts. Get it on the App Store or on Google Play.
